The Phantom Hair Dryer.

I’m going to tell a little scary story that happened to me. I suppose there’ll be a person out there who will find a logical explanation to the incident, but personally, I couldn’t find one and to this day I chalk it up to the mysterious cosmos. And anyway, we all have that one thing that we can’t explain, right?

Turn out the lights (if you dare) and let’s get started.

When I was in ninth grade, my parents decided to renovate the master bathroom down to the nuts and bolts. Because of this, if we wanted to use the restroom or take a shower, we had to go down to the guest bathroom. Of course, being a high school student, I had to take a shower after homework and supper and get ready for bed.

On this particular school night, I went through my nightly routine and went to bed. The only thing differently I didn’t do was unplug the hair dryer.

During the night, I woke up to the sound of the hair dryer running on high. It must be my dad getting ready for work, I thought, and immediately fell back to sleep.

Some time past and I woke up again. The hair dryer was still running. Surely he’s left for work by now. I looked at the clock beside my bed. 10 p.m. My dad didn’t have to get up for work until 4 a.m.

I got up and went out into the hallway. It was dark, even in the guest bathroom. Why would someone be drying their hair in the dark? I made my way over to the door; it was open ajar. No one was in there, and yet the dryer was running full blast. I slid my hand inside, turned it off and snatched it back as if a monster was waiting for me.

I hurried into the family room where my mom was watching tv.

“What are you doing awake?”

“How come the hair dryer was going off by itself?”

“I don’t know, maybe you left it on before going to bed.”

“No, it was off, remember?”

“Then it must have been in between the on and off switch and it just turned itself on.”

“It was all the way off. It can’t turn itself on that easily.”

“Well, then I don’t know what’s going on.”

“It must have been a ghost.”

“Don’t be silly, go back to bed.”

It had never happened before that night, nor did it happen again after. I still have no idea what happened to it years later. Maybe we just stirred up a curious ghost wanting to figure out modern appliances before going back to the afterworld.
