Easy Reading

I used to follow a blogger whose tag line reads “Easy reading is damn hard writing.” I always found it to be a catchy, in your face line, one that made me smile every time I saw it. And to be honest, I find the sentiment to be true. Those books that you pick up to read because you don’t want to think too hard have actually taken the writer months and even years to perfect and help you relax after a hard day.

It’s always funny, that phrase “easy reading.” What in the world is “easy reading?” Books that don’t have big words in them? Stories with quick plots and little characterization? Something from the children’s section? A picture book, even?

It’s hard to say what someone would consider to be easy reading. No matter what you consider to be easy, it certainly wasn’t easy for the author to write it, edit it, and publish it. I’m sure they were even rejected from several different publishers before someone picked their books up from obscurity to be published.

That is all.
